Fundamentals of BDSM psychology

Before we can get down to the nitty-gritty of understanding the psychology of different BDSM activities, relationships or motivations, we need to develop an understanding of some of the fundamentals of BDSM, things which are common to all of BDSM. If we don't do this, if we instead pick some arbitrary activity, such as predicament bondage, and try to work out what's going on, then we may well come up with some explanations or understandings which will help us when dealing with suspension bondage enthusiasts, but when we're confronted with, say, someone into role play then we will have no clue.

When we start with the fundamentals and work up from there, then we can fit the predicament bondage enthusiasts we meet into a bigger picture, along with the role players, the molten wax aficionados and the service slaves. We will have one picture, not just many fragments.
