Dungeon monitor

A dungeon monitor is a person who has the responsibility at public or private play parties to:

  1. Patrol the parties looking for unsafe or dangerous play,
  2. Enforce rules governing the use of the premises and equipment, and
  3. Adjudicate disputes.

The role of dungeon monitor is required at BDSM when guests are given unregulated access to dungeon spaces and dungeon equipment. Because the owner of the premises bears responsibility for what happens in those premises, it's typically the case that there will be house rules which determine what can and cannot be done with the equipment and rooms provided.

For example, long scenes are usually discouraged because these tie up equipment or rooms and prevent everyone from having a chance to play. Heavy or intense play is also discouraged, typically because it is both difficult to monitor, and because it's difficult to know exactly how skilled the people are who are doing it and thus what risks are being taken.

A dungeon monitor is usually someone with enough skill and experience to recognise most forms of play, and they are thus also able to assist less experienced BDSM folk with help or advice if they see a scene having problems.

The dungeon monitor may be the organiser of the party, and larger parties may have more than one dungeon monitor appointed by the organiser.
