Ownership

In BDSM, ownership is where one person (typically a master or mistress) treats another person (typically a slave) as they wish, frequently commanding them and using them for their own pleasure and satisfaction.

Ownership can be thought of as the right to exercise authority, such as technical or personal authority.

Transfer of ownership of authority

Typically, a transfers of ownership occurs when:

  1. A slave enters into a relationship with (or is "collared" by) a master, and
  2. A slave is released by their master

A slave may reclaim ownership of themselves without the involvement or any action by their master when the cost of remaining "owned" becomes too high. Such a cost may be:

  1. The slave is being ignored or under-used by their master. Thus, the slave's own needs are not being met, or
  2. The slave is being abused or being compelled to act against their own moral, ethical, or religious beliefs.

Reclaiming ownership of themselves is than ideal, or even harmful, for a slave. Where the slave's own needs involve surrendering as much authority as possible to their master, reclaiming authority goes very much against that. Being compelled to consider, attempt, and even succeed at doing so can be damaging to the slave's identity.
