Training, in general, has to do with one person teaching another person a skill. This might be a physical skill or a mental skill. Training frequently has to do with a lot of repetition.

In some BDSM circles, training is presented as merely beating the crap out of, and/or fucking, an ignorant submissive until they learn to like it. This doesn't do the term justice, but the keyword is "ignorant" and many new submissives either want to, or are lead to, believe that endurance is the be all and end all of submission.

Training ideally should consist of three phases:

  1. Teacher - the trainer uses superior knowledge and experience to exercise the student as they believe will work best for the student
  2. Supervisor - the student gains some autonomy in directing their own exercises, and in requesting assistance where they believe they need it
  3. Peer - where the teacher puts aside that role of implicit technical or academic superiority, and instead becomes a colleague and peer; less telling the ex-trainee what to do, and more sharing their greater experience with the ex-trainee

For tops, dominants, and masters

Tops, dominants, and masters can benefit from training in a number of ways:

  • Learning how to perform the mechanical aspects of BDSM---such as performing bondage safely, knowing where and how to strike someone with a cane or flogger, infection protocols, etc.
  • Understanding how taking and giving control works

For bottoms, submissives, and slaves

Bottoms, submissives, and slaves can benefit from training in a number of ways:

  • Learning how to surrender to and process the experiences they have with their partner
  • Understanding the psychological processes they themselves go through, and which their partner goes through

Service

Where a submissive or slave is service-oriented, training can consist of learning the preferences of their partner, as well as any tasks or duties which their partner wishes them to perform.
