Rope is made from natural or synthetic fibre twisted or braided together in lengths. It is frequently used in bondage scenes. It is soft and flexible, and will stretch depending on the material it is made from and how it is woven. It is not as cold and unyielding as chain.

There are many types of rope, too many to list here, but their important characteristics include:

• Elasticity or stretchiness
• Thickness - thick rope is typically quite strong and can be used to support the weight of a person, where finer rope may be used merely to restrain
• Texture - some rope, such as synthetic, can be quite smooth, while other rope, such as hemp, can be very coarse and scratchy on the skin
